How Do I Know What Watch Strap Fits My Watch?

How Do I Know What Watch Strap Fits My Watch?

The most common watch strap buying mistake is ordering the wrong size. The second most common is ordering the wrong length. Both are easily avoided with two measurements — and this guide explains exactly what to measure, where to find the information, and what to do with it.

Step 1 — Find Your Lug Width

Lug width is the gap in millimetres between the two lugs on your watch case. This is the only measurement that determines whether the strap fits the watch. It must be exact.

The three ways to find it:

Check your watch's specifications. Most watch manufacturers publish lug width in the technical specifications — listed as "lug width", "strap width", or "band width" in millimetres. Search your watch model online and look for these terms. This is the fastest method.

Measure it directly. Use a ruler or digital calipers to measure the gap between the inner edges of the two lugs. Measure in millimetres. A reading of 19.5mm means 20mm. Standard strap widths are 2mm apart so any reading clearly indicates the correct size.

Check the existing strap. Many straps have the width printed or stamped on the inside near the buckle end. If the current strap fits correctly, this gives you the size.

The most common lug widths:

  • 18mm — Nomos, Junghans, ladies' sport and dress
  • 19mm — vintage Rolex references
  • 20mm — the most common size — Omega Seamaster, Seiko SKX, Tudor Black Bay, Rolex Submariner
  • 22mm — Tudor Pelagos, IWC Pilot's Watch, larger sport watches

For a complete list by watch model see the lug width reference guide.

Step 2 — Check Your Wrist Size

Lug width determines which strap fits the watch. Wrist circumference determines whether you need a standard or short length strap — these are completely independent measurements.

Wrap a flexible tape measure around your wrist just above the wrist bone. If your circumference is under 165mm (6.5 inches), order a short strap. Standard straps leave excess tail on smaller wrists that looks wrong and feels uncomfortable.

See how to measure your wrist for the full measuring guide.

Step 3 — Choose the Right Material for Your Watch

Different watches suit different strap materials. A quick guide:

Dress watchesleather or perlon. The watch's formal character requires a strap that matches its register.

Dive watchesFKM rubber for diving, leather or nylon for everyday wear.

Field and military watchessingle-pass nylon or canvas for the most authentic combination.

Pilot watchesbund calfskin or canvas for the historically correct choice.

Sport watchesnylon or silicone for active use, leather for smart-casual.

The Most Common Fitting Mistakes

Wrong lug width — a 20mm strap on a 22mm watch will not fit. Measure or check the specifications before ordering.

Standard length on a small wrist — the most common complaint after receiving a strap. If your wrist is under 165mm, order a short strap.

Wrong spring bar diameter — if your watch has tight lug holes, standard spring bars may not compress fully. The 1.45mm slim quick-release bar is the solution. See spring bar guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size watch strap I need? Measure the gap between your watch lugs in millimetres — this is your lug width. Order a strap in that exact width. If your wrist circumference is under 165mm (6.5 inches), order a short length. See how to measure your wrist and the lug width reference guide.

Will any watch strap fit my watch? Any strap in the correct lug width fits any watch with standard spring bar lugs. The lug width must match exactly. Watches with proprietary connectors (Apple Watch, some smartwatches) require brand-specific bands.

What if I don't know my lug width? Check your watch's published specifications online, measure the lug gap directly with a ruler, or check the inside of your existing strap for the width marking. See the lug width reference guide for a complete list by watch model.
