Original Nylon Watch Straps

In 1973 the British Ministry of Defence issued a specification for a nylon watch strap — single-pass construction, admiralty grey, 20mm wide, chrome-plated brass hardware — that would become one of the most widely worn and most copied strap designs in history. The specification was designed to solve a specific military problem: leather cracked in tropical climates, metal hardware reflected light in the field, and existing fabric straps lacked durability and standardisation. The MOD's nylon strap was none of these things. It was simple, robust, waterproof, and designed to survive.

CNS Watch Bands has produced faithful reproductions of the original military nylon strap since the beginning of the brand. The Original collection is built to the same essential specification — single-pass ballistic nylon, flat stainless steel hardware, heat-sealed edges — and includes two security features that most competing military nylon straps do not: the CNS solid buckle, with no spring bar inside the buckle frame that can be torn free under stress, and the single-pass construction that keeps the watch on the strap even if a lug spring bar fails. Available in 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, and 24mm lug widths, in hundreds of solid colours and regimental stripe combinations.

What Makes the Original Military Nylon Strap

The design has barely changed in over fifty years because it was right from the beginning. Every element of the original MOD specification serves a purpose:

Single-pass construction. One continuous piece of nylon threads over both spring bars and under the watch case, then adjusts and buckles at the wrist. The most important practical consequence: if one spring bar fails, the watch remains attached to the strap by the other. It cannot fall from your wrist. For the full range of single-pass options including leather and rubber, see the slip-through watch straps collection.

The CNS solid buckle. CNS Watch Bands is one of the only strap brands to use a fully solid buckle — no spring bar inside the buckle frame. Most buckles on competing straps use a spring bar to attach the strap tail to the buckle, which introduces a potential failure point: a hard enough impact or sudden pull can tear the spring bar free. With a CNS solid buckle, there is no spring bar in the buckle to fail. Combined with the single-pass construction, this makes the Original one of the most secure watch straps available. The same solid buckle is used on the RAF strap and the Ribbed strap.

Flat rectangular hardware. The buckle and keepers are flat, stamped from steel, and deliberately low-profile. They sit close to the wrist without the rounded bulk of heavier hardware styles, and the flat profile is less likely to catch on clothing or equipment.

Ballistic nylon. The nylon webbing is tightly woven with heat-sealed edges that prevent fraying over years of active use. Fully water-resistant, quick-drying, and resistant to UV degradation, salt, sweat, and most chemicals.

Long strap length. The original specification called for a longer strap than a standard dress watch band — long enough to be worn over a flight suit sleeve or wetsuit. This generous length, still a feature of the Original, ensures the watch can be worn in any condition and over virtually any clothing layer.

The Colour Range — Hundreds of Options

The Original is the deepest colour collection in the CNS range — covering every significant military, regimental, and fashion colourway available in nylon:

Solid colours — admiralty grey (the most historically correct), black (the most versatile), navy, olive, khaki, and hundreds of additional solid tones. For men's watches, olive, black, and navy are the most widely worn. For women's watches, the Original range covers pastels and fashion colours alongside the military palette.

Regimental stripes — two and three-colour stripe combinations derived from the colour traditions of British military regiments and the James Bond films. The Vintage Bond colourway (black/olive/red), the Craig/Spectre colourway (black/grey), and hundreds of additional combinations. For the full Bond colourway guide see the James Bond watch bands page.

Tactical colourways — OD green, coyote tan, ranger green, and multicam patterns specifically for field, military, and operational use. Available in the Original construction at 20mm and 22mm.

For the complete military and regimental context, see the military watch bands collection.

The Original vs Other CNS Nylon Straps

The Original is the baseline — the most versatile, most historically correct, and most colour-diverse nylon strap in the CNS range. Here is how it relates to the alternatives:

  Original Ribbed Deluxe RAF
Nylon surface Flat matte Corded texture Glossy smooth Flat matte
Keeper Metal rings Metal rings Metal rings Fabric loop
Solid buckle Yes Yes No — premium buckle Yes
Spring bar backup Yes Yes Yes Yes
Exclusive colourways No — full open range Yes — CNS only Yes — CNS only No
Character Utilitarian, military Textured, collector Refined, vivid Clean, low-profile

Choose Original if: you want the most historically correct military nylon construction, the widest possible colour range, or maximum security from both the solid buckle and single-pass construction.

Choose Ribbed if: you want the same solid buckle security with a more textured, visually distinctive surface and exclusive colourways including the signature mustard yellow.

Choose Deluxe if: you want a glossy, more refined finish and exclusive colour combinations, and the premium buckle rather than solid buckle is acceptable.

Choose RAF if: you want the same single-pass construction and solid buckle as the Original with a fabric loop keeper instead of metal rings — cleaner profile, same security.

Why the Original Construction Still Wins

Fifty years of alternatives have not produced a single-piece military nylon strap that meaningfully improves on the original:

Security without complexity. The single-pass construction provides genuine watch security without additional mechanism, weight, or bulk. The CNS solid buckle adds a second security layer by eliminating the buckle spring bar failure point. Two independent security mechanisms. No additional hardware.

Universal fit. The long strap length and multiple adjustment holes accommodate the widest range of wrist sizes of almost any strap style. The same strap fits a slim wrist on day wear and a larger wrist over a wetsuit sleeve.

Maintenance-free durability. Nylon does not crack, dry out, stain, or need conditioning. Rinse under the tap if dirty. Air dry. Wear it the next day.

Instant style change. The low cost and broad colour range of the Original makes it the most accessible way to dramatically change the appearance of a watch. Moving from a polished steel bracelet to a striped nylon strap changes the entire character of the watch in seconds.

What Watches Suit the Original Military Nylon Strap?

The Original is one of the most versatile strap styles in existence:

Military and field watches — the most historically correct pairing. Hamilton Khaki, Marathon, Seiko SARB, vintage military-issue pieces from CWC, Timex, and Cabot. For the full military watch bands context including regimental stripes and RAF history, see the military collection.

Dive watches — Seiko SKX, Omega Seamaster, Tudor Black Bay, Rolex Submariner. Water-resistant, quick-drying, and secure. The original pairing of a luxury dive watch with a simple military nylon strap has been one of the most celebrated in watch culture since the Bond films.

Sport watches — any watch worn during activity where comfort, security, and water resistance matter. For a full activity-by-activity guide see sport watch bands.

Dress watches worn casually — one of the most effective casual styling moves in watch collecting. A slim dress watch on a striped military nylon strap is deliberately unconventional in a way that signals genuine strap knowledge.

MoonSwatch at 20mm — the Original is the most widely worn MoonSwatch strap. The Bond-inspired colourways in particular suit Mission to the Moon and other references directly.

Sizing

Original nylon watch straps are sized by lug width — the gap in millimetres between your watch's two lugs:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an original military nylon watch strap? A faithful reproduction of the 1973 British Ministry of Defence specification — single-pass ballistic nylon with flat stainless steel hardware and the CNS solid buckle. The single-pass construction provides spring bar backup security; the solid buckle eliminates the buckle spring bar failure point. Available in hundreds of solid colours and regimental stripe combinations at lug widths from 18mm to 24mm.

What is the CNS solid buckle? The CNS solid buckle has no spring bar inside the buckle frame. Most buckles use a spring bar to attach the strap tail to the buckle — a potential failure point under sudden impact. The CNS solid buckle eliminates this entirely. Combined with the single-pass construction, this makes the Original one of the most secure watch straps available. The same solid buckle is used on the RAF and Ribbed straps.

Are original military nylon straps waterproof? Yes. Ballistic nylon is fully water-resistant — unaffected by freshwater, saltwater, sweat, and chlorine. The Original dries quickly after immersion and requires no special care after water exposure. For sustained professional diving, FKM rubber provides even higher water resistance.

What size original military nylon strap do I need? Measure the gap in millimetres between your watch's two lugs. 20mm is the most common size, fitting the majority of popular sport and dive watches. CNS also carries 19mm and 21mm for Rolex references, and 24mm for Panerai.
