Cut-To-Size Rubber Watch Straps

Cut-to-Size Rubber Watch Straps

Every standard watch strap is a compromise. The holes are spaced 5mm apart. Your wrist falls between two of them. The strap is either fractionally too tight or fractionally too loose, and the excess tail beyond the buckle folds into a keeper or hangs awkwardly regardless of how carefully you fit it. Cut-to-size rubber watch straps solve this problem definitively — both pieces of the strap are supplied at maximum length and trimmed with scissors to your exact wrist measurement. The strap closes with a deployant clasp rather than a buckle, which means there is no tail, no keepers, and no compromise. The result is a strap that fits precisely, looks completely clean on the wrist, and stays that way. CNS Watch Bands cut-to-size straps are available in FKM fluorocarbon rubber and silicone, in 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, and 22mm lug widths.

How Cut-to-Size Works

The concept is straightforward — the execution takes about ten minutes:

Step 1 — Measure your wrist. Wrap a flexible tape measure or strip of paper around your wrist at the position you wear your watch. Note the measurement in millimetres.

Step 2 — Measure your watch. Measure the lug-to-lug distance on your watch case — from one spring bar hole to the other across the case back. This determines how much of the strap length is taken up by the watch itself.

Step 3 — Account for the clasp. Measure the length of the deployant clasp from end to end. This length sits in the centre of the wrist and is not cut.

Step 4 — Calculate and mark. Subtract the watch lug-to-lug distance and the clasp length from your wrist measurement. The remaining length is divided between the two strap pieces. Mark each piece with tape — always cut slightly longer than your calculation on the first attempt.

Step 5 — Trim one segment at a time. Cut from the free end of each piece, not the lug end. Try the strap on after each trim. Repeat until the clasp sits centred on the underside of your wrist with the watch secure and comfortable. Remember: you can always cut more but you cannot add length back.

Step 6 — Attach the deployant clasp. Use a spring bar tool to attach the clasp to both trimmed ends. The clasp folds open and shut with a clean, satisfying snap.

The whole process requires only scissors, a spring bar tool, and a tape measure — all of which are likely already in your possession or included with the strap.

Why Cut-to-Size Is Better Than Standard Holes

The case for cut-to-size over a standard buckle strap is concrete:

No excess tail. A standard strap always produces a tail beyond the buckle — typically 30–50mm of material that has to be folded back and forced through a keeper. Even when well-managed, the tail adds bulk and can work loose during the day. A cut-to-size strap has no tail. The strap ends exactly where the clasp begins.

No keepers required. Without a tail, there is nothing to keep. The strap surface around the entire wrist is clean — no hardware interrupting the rubber, no keeper rings shifting position during wear.

Precision fit for any wrist. Standard strap holes are spaced 5mm apart. A wrist that falls between two holes is either too tight on one or too loose on the other. Cut-to-size eliminates the 5mm interval entirely — the fit is precise to within a millimetre, and remains consistent regardless of wrist circumference.

Deployant security. The deployant clasp provides a more secure closure than a standard tang buckle. The leaf-spring mechanism snaps shut positively and does not work loose during active use. For diving, swimming, and sport, this is a meaningful practical advantage over a buckle that relies on a prong in a hole.

Clean aesthetic. The combination of no tail, no keepers, and a centred deployant clasp produces one of the cleanest-looking strap fits possible. The rubber lies flush around the wrist with no interruption — an appearance that complements modern and minimalist watch designs particularly well.

FKM Rubber vs. Silicone — Which to Choose

CNS cut-to-size straps are available in two rubber materials, each with distinct properties:

FKM (fluorocarbon rubber) is the premium choice — used on professional dive watches from Omega, Rolex, and Tudor for its exceptional resistance to heat, seawater, chlorine, UV, chemicals, and oils. FKM does not attract dust, maintains its shape and elasticity over years of active use, and has a firm, slightly textured feel on the wrist. The material of choice for regular diving, swimming, and high-intensity activity. Available in matte finish.

Silicone is lighter, softer, and more flexible than FKM — with a smoother feel against the skin and a wider colour range. Slightly less resistant to heat and chemicals than FKM but excellent for everyday wear, gym use, and casual water exposure. The better choice for buyers who prioritise wrist comfort and colour options over maximum chemical resistance.

For most buyers, FKM is the performance recommendation. For buyers who want the softer feel and broader colour palette, silicone delivers an excellent cut-to-size experience at a lower price point.

The Tropical Style Cut-to-Size Strap

The CNS Tropical Style CTS collection applies the cut-to-size construction to a basket-weave textured rubber inspired by the vintage tropical rubber straps associated with mid-century dive watches. The basket-weave pattern:

  • Provides improved breathability compared to smooth rubber
  • Maintains its pattern cleanly after cutting — the texture continues to the trimmed end
  • References the aesthetic of classic tropical dive straps from the 1960s and 1970s, now highly collectible
  • Suits vintage dive watches, modern tool watches, and any piece with a heritage aesthetic

Available in the same lug widths and with the same deployant clasp as the standard CTS range. The Tropical Style is the choice for buyers who want the precision fit of the cut-to-size construction with a more visually distinctive surface than smooth rubber.

What Watches Suit Cut-to-Size Rubber Straps?

The cut-to-size deployant construction is particularly well-suited to specific categories of watch:

Dive and tool watches — Omega Seamaster, Rolex Submariner, Tudor Black Bay, Seiko Prospex. The clean rubber and deployant clasp combination is the modern standard for serious dive watch wear — secure, waterproof, and visually precise.

Dress-sport watches — watches that cross between formal and casual contexts. The deployant clasp and clean finish of a cut-to-size rubber strap elevates rubber into territory that a standard buckle strap cannot reach. A slim cut-to-size rubber strap on a dress-sport watch reads as considered rather than casual.

Luxury sport watches — Rolex Daytona, Omega Speedmaster, IWC Pilot's worn on rubber. The absence of tail and keeper produces a finish that complements the quality of the watch itself. A standard buckle strap always looks slightly less refined than the watch deserves; a cut-to-size deployant does not.

Watches worn by people with non-standard wrist sizes. The 5mm hole interval on a standard strap is a real problem for wrists that fall between standard sizes. Cut-to-size eliminates this entirely — every wrist size is accommodated precisely.

Sizing Your Cut-to-Size Rubber Strap

Cut-to-size rubber straps are available in the following lug widths:

Lug Width Common Watch Examples
18mm Smaller sport and vintage watches
19mm Vintage Rolex references, select references
20mm Omega Seamaster, Seiko Prospex, Tudor Black Bay 41
21mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm, select references
22mm Tudor Pelagos, IWC Pilot's, larger sport watches

Note: the strap is supplied at maximum length. You trim both pieces to fit. The lug width is fixed — only the length is cut-to-size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to cut a rubber watch strap to size? Scissors, a spring bar tool, and a tape measure. No specialist tools are required. The process takes approximately 10 minutes on the first attempt and becomes quicker with practice. The cardinal rule: always cut slightly less than you think you need, then trim again. You cannot add length back.

Can I use a cut-to-size strap on more than one watch? Yes, with a caveat. If both watches have the same lug width and similar lug-to-lug distances, the trimmed strap can be swapped between them. If the lug-to-lug distances differ significantly, the deployant clasp will sit in a different position on the wrist for each watch. For watches with very different lug-to-lug measurements, a separate strap per watch is recommended.

What is a deployant clasp? A deployant clasp (also called a butterfly clasp or folding clasp) is a two-piece folding closure that attaches to both ends of the strap and opens and shuts by folding outward. It is more secure than a standard tang buckle, sits lower on the wrist, and distributes the closure across a wider area. The CNS cut-to-size deployant uses a leaf-spring mechanism that snaps shut with a positive, tactile click.

Is the pattern maintained after cutting? Yes. Both standard and Tropical Style CTS straps maintain their surface pattern to the trimmed end. The basket-weave pattern on the Tropical Style continues cleanly to the cut edge without distortion.

Can I re-use the deployant clasp on a new strap? Yes. The deployant clasp attaches via standard spring bars and can be removed with a spring bar tool and reattached to a new strap of the same lug width.
